The G20 group of countries, which includes South Africa, has placed food security at the top of its agenda. Following on the L’Aquila Summit, the 2009 World Food Summit and previous G20 Summits, the FAO, OECD, World Bank, WFP, WTO, IMF, IFPRI and others were requested to join forces and produce a policy report on “Price volatility in food and agricultural markets: Policy responses”. The FAO and OECD coordinated the preparation of the report, while inputs were also made by the Agricultural Committee of the Business and Industry Advisory Committee (BIAC) to the OECD. The Agricultural Business Chamber serves on this BIAC Committee. The policy document was discussed by the G20 Ministers of Agriculture Meeting on 22-23 June 2011 and they subsequently released the The G20 Action Plan on Food Price Volatility and Agriculture. Also see the BIAC press release prior to the G20 Ministers of Agriculture Meeting.

Global Food Production under Alternative Scenarios
Ellen Huan-Niemi, Janne Niemi, and Jyrki Niemi
Published by: International Food and Agribusiness Management Association (IFAMA): 2010
Food is vital in our lives, but it is more than just survival. Our relationship with food is intertwined with trade policies, politics, economics, and environmental concerns, in addition to culture and science. The future of food production is in a path filled with dilemmas. Infectious animal diseases that lead to food safety concerns, energy crisis, declining biodiversity, natural resources depletion, pollution, and global climate change are all intervening in the path in different ways at different levels. CIMA, or the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants’ report named “From GATE TO PLATE” on strategic management accounting in the UK agricultural industry. This provides an interesting read on: Costing in the agri-food sector is an enigmatic business, due to its unusual characteristics.
Complex supply chains, a largely fragmented production base and a shortage of accounting expertise, all contribute to a lack of visibility of costs at various stages of the supply chain from the farm gate to the diner’s plate.
Producers also have to contend with the relative concentration of power with the large retailers; and with the vagaries of weather and disease.
