Agribusiness executives are once again requested to participate in the ABC/IDC Agribusiness Confidence Index survey. Please complete the online questionnaire and submit before close of business on Tuesday, 31 January 2012.  Alternatively follow the traditional route by downloading the  MS Office Word based questionnaire and e-mail/fax to the ABC Office before/on the abovementioned date.

4th Quarter of 2011:  Agribusinesses' Confidence Dropping Towards the End of the Year

The confidence in the agribusiness sector has dropped significantly by the end of 2011. The ABC/IDC Agribusiness Confidence Index reached a level of 51.25 index points in the fourth quarter of 2011, which indicated that just more than half of the responding agribusinesses were overall positive about the status of the sector. The ABC/IDC Agribusiness Confidence Index in the fourth quarter of 2011 was 7% lower than at the end of 2010 and 10% lower than the preceding quarter.

3nd Quarter of 2011:  Slowdown of the Agribusiness upswing

Agribusinesses’ confidence dropped to its lowest level in 2011, as the slow growth of the South African economy and the uncertainties impacts on the sector. The confidence in the third quarter of 2011 is 9 % lower than in the second quarter. It is, however, a mere 7% higher than the third quarter of 2010, and almost 65% higher than the third quarter of 2009, which was the all-time low for the index during the peak of the recession.

2nd Quarter of 2011:  From the “highs” in 2008, to the “lows” in 2009 and again the “highs” in 2011.

Agribusinesses in South Africa have had positive business confidence for a year now; peaking since the beginning of 2011. According to the results from the ABC/IDC Agribusiness Confidence Index, agribusinesses’ confidence increased to 62.7 index points in the second quarter of 2011. It is a mere 1% higher than the first quarter of 2011 and 12% higher than the same quarter of the previous year.

1st Quarter of 2011:  Positive confidence levels maintained for almost a year now...

The ABC / IDC Agribusiness Confidence Index reached its highest level in more than three years.  The index measured at 62 basis points in the first quarter of 2011; which is 13% higher than the preceding quarter and 43% higher than the same quarter of the previous year...

2010: ABC / IDC Agribusiness Confidence Index

4th Quarter of 2010:  Positive Agribusiness Confidence remains

By the end of 2010, agribusiness executives were again positive about the agribusiness environment, especially when compared to the end of 2009, when decision-makers in the agribusiness sector experienced an all-time low confidence in their business. The Agricultural Business Chamber (ABC) and the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) found in the results of the ABC/IDC Agribusiness Confidence Index that agribusiness confidence were positive (> 50 index points) from the second quarter of 2010 right through to the end of the year...

3rd Quarter of 2010: Positive Agribusiness Confidence does no yet excite

gribusiness confidence is measured quarterly by the Agricultural Business Chamber (ABC) and the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) through the ABC/IDC Agribusiness Confidence Index. The confidence level in the third quarter of 2010 was 53% higher than the same quarter of the previous year, which happened to be the all-time lowest level observed. This significant increase was expected, considering the low basis it was measured from. The confidence, however, decreased with 5% since the second quarter of 2010. This is of concern and definitely inhibits the excitement of the significant year-on-year increase. A further decrease is not necessarily expected, however, this small quarter-to-quarter decrease might indicate that confidence might remain in the low, positive range...

2nd Quarter of 2010:  Long awaited positive Agribusiness Confidence not convincing

The ABC/IDC Agribusiness Confidence Index increased to positive levels (higher than 50 index points) in the second quarter of 2010. The confidence levels increased to 56, which is 47% higher than the same quarter of 2009 and 29% higher than the first quarter of 2010. The increase is quite significant, but was expected, considering the very negative levels of confidence in 2009; that also reached an all-time low in the third quarter. A further increase is therefore also expected for the third quarter of 2010, even though conditions are not as favourable for the agribusiness sector as could be perceived when considering the increase in confidence.

1st Quarter of 2010: Negative Agribusiness Confidence at last lifting its head

The ABC/IDC Agribusiness Confidence Index remains in negative territory (<50 Index points), even though it improved somewhat in comparison to the preceding quarter, as well as in comparison to the same quarter of the previous year. Agribusiness confidence rose almost to the levels recorded at the end of 2008. According to Mrs Lindie Stroebel, the economic intelligence manager at the Agricultural Business Chamber (ABC) and compiler of the index, it would have been convenient to speculate whether it will return to the positive (even peaking) period in mid-2008. However, Stroebel warned that it would be dangerous, considering the expectations of lower commodity prices, strong exchange rates and the variable weather and production conditions being experienced, with specific reference also to the severe drought conditions in the southern and south eastern parts of the country.

2009: ABC / IDC Agribusiness Confidence Index

4th Quarter of 2009:  Long awaited recovery in Agribusinesses' Confidence

After two years of consistent decreases in confidence in the agribusiness sector, as measured by the ABC/IDC Agribusiness Confidence Index, the fourth quarter of 2009 showed a slight quarter-to-quarter increase of 14%, from 34.6 in the third quarter of 2009 to 39.6 in the fourth. However, there was still an 11% decrease in confidence when compared to the same quarter of the previous year. The confidence has recovered to the level of the 1st quarter of this year. This indicates that the sector is geared for growth, with the one risk factor being the climatic conditions...

3rd Quarter of 2009:
All-time low for agribusiness confidence

The Agricultural Business Chamber (ABC) and the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) once again constructed the ABC/IDC Agribusiness Confidence Index from the perceptions of decision makers in the agribusiness sector. In the third quarter of 2009 (July to September) the confidence in the agribusiness sector dropped to all all-time low of 34.62, since the initialisation of the index in 2001. The confidence is only 8,6% lower than the preceding quarter, but is a convincing 35,1% lower than the same quarter of the previous year, which makes more sense to take into account, considering the seasonality of agriculture...

2nd Quarter of 2009:  Is this the turning point in the drop in agribusiness confidence?
The Agricultural Business Chamber (ABC) and the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) have found that agribusiness confidence levels, measured for the second quarter of 2009, may indicate a possible turning point in the drop in the ABC/IDC Agribusiness Confidence Index over the past year. In general, decision-makers in agriculture are not overly pessimistic about the sector’s performance, taking into consideration two consecutive years of relatively good producer prices and above average yields. According to Statistics South Africa’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) figures, the country’s economic growth has relied heavily on agriculture’s positive performance over the past year. However, the local economic downturn and recently proclaimed recession and the impact of the global economic slowdown have not left the sector unharmed...

1st Quarter of 2009:
The deteriorating local and global economy lays heavily on the business confidence in South Africa

The South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry published their lowest confidence levels in more than six years. Recent growth figures by StatsSA highlighted two sectors which are still contributing significantly to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), being the construction and the agricultural sectors. The agricultural sector in South Africa is therefore still contributing, even though the Agricultural Business Chamber (ABC) and the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) found in their ABC/IDC Agribusiness Confidence Index that the agribusiness confidence in the first quarter of 2009 dropped by almost 30% compared to the same quarter of last year...
