Food miles are simply the distance foodstuffs travel from the farm gate to the consumer. This has a significant impact on goods traded internationally. The miles also increase due to longer supply chains.
Due to fossil fuel usage during distribution and transportation, a direct correlation has been assumed between distance traveled and carbon emissions. Therefore also called carbon miles.
