The UK's capabilities in the Agri-business sector

The UK’s farming industry employs over half a million people and contributes £6.6 billion (about R92.4 billion) a year to the UK economy, using around three-quarters of UK land. Primary responsibility for the sector rests with the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs but support for international trade is the responsibility of UK Trade & Investment.

UK retailers have some of the strictest standards in the world and widespread reporting by the media further heightens consumer fears over food safety.  As a result, UK Agri-food production and processing technologies are among the most advanced in the world and the industries that support them are also well developed.  The sector as a whole has both the expertise and technology to satisfy the most demanding overseas markets, particularly in science, research, innovation and food supply-chain technologies. Exports in this sector are significant with exports in 2004 totalling 5.1% of all UK exports at £9.7 billion (about R136 billion).  Livestock production, products and animal feed were among the top exports; however, the UK runs a net trade deficit in the sector.  Imports of food, feed and drink in 2004 were £21.9 billion (about R306 billion), totalling 8.7% of UK imports.

Increasing focus and aspiration to grow the tourism industry in both the UK and South Africa is also leading to a focus on eco-tourism, which requires land management skills and knowledge.  Linked to this is also the opportunity for collaboration on equine science and welfare as equine tourism grows in popularity.

If you looking for ideas about how to expand your business globally, look no further than UK Trade & Investment, the British Government’s organisation that helps businesses locate in the UK and grow internationally.  Every year hundreds of firms are supported, from hi-tech start-ups to global industry leaders, and with over 600 South African companies already in the UK, you'll be in good company.
